Billionaire Mike Bloomberg, who graduated with an engineering degree from Johns Hopkins in 1964, has donated $1 billion to the university to address the nation’s significant shortage of doctors.
Starting this fall, medical students from families earning less than $300,000 annually will benefit from free tuition.
This generous contribution will make medical school accessible for many and enhance financial aid for nursing, public health students, and other graduate programs.
In a letter published in the Bloomberg Philanthropies annual report, Bloomberg discussed the intertwined issues of declining health and education in the US.
His gift underscores the importance of higher education, especially as it faces increasing political scrutiny.
Bloomberg, a Johns Hopkins alumnus, highlighted that US life expectancy remains low compared to other countries post-COVID-19.
He also pointed out the detrimental impact of remote schooling during the pandemic, calling it a “disaster for students.”
