John Whitmire will be the new mayor of Houston, wins against Democrat Sheila Jackson Lee

Although there was no doubt that the mayor of Houston would be a Democrat, it has now been confirmed that John Whitmire has won the runoff in Houston. The Democratic Senator from Texas defeated the Democratic Representative from Texas. Both Whitmire and Sheila Jackson Lee advanced to the runoff election after a November 7 election that featured 18 candidates, and Whitmire was ahead.

Although both John Whitmire and Sheila Jackson Lee fought on similar issues, including high rates of crime in the fourth-largest city in America, Whitmire raised higher funds and was able to outspend Jackson Lee on the airwaves. According to AdImpact Jackson Lee spent $60,000, while Whitmire spent $2 million.

Although the race was nonpartisan, Texas Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee received endorsements from major heavyweights among the Democrats, such as term-limited Houston mayor Sylvester Turner, Nancy Pelosi, and Hillary Clinton. However, an audio call of Jackson Lee berating a member of her staff who didn’t have a document that the Congresswoman was looking for created a controversy.

John Whitmire received support from big-time locals. He received what could be perceived as bipartisan support, as he reportedly had a 56-point advantage among Republicans, according to the University of Houston. He also had a 20-point advantage among Latino voters.

John Whitmire is the longest-serving member in the Texas Senate, and he also benefited from the audio controversy, although Jackson Lee apologized after it leaked. She said that she strongly believed that “everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, and that included my staff.”

Both John Whitmire and Sheila Jackson Lee have several decades of experience in Houston. Whitmire is in his 50th year in the legislature of the Lone Star State, and his mayoral victory will result in a special election for his seat in the Texas Senate. Sheila Jackson Lee entered Congress in 1994. Earlier, she served on the Houston City Council for four years.
