Former first lady Rosalynn Carter died peacefully in her sleep on November 19, 2023. On Tuesday, her husband Jimmy Carter, President Joe Biden, first lady Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and first gentleman Doug Emhoff, former president Bill Clinton, former first lady and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and all living first ladies, including Melania Trump, Michelle Obama, and Laura Bush, attended a memorial service in Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.

The service consisted of biblical verses, hymns and tributes by her children, grandchildren, and others. Although her 99-year-old husband Jimmy Carter did not speak, the former president had released a statement after wife Rosalynn Carter’s death. Her children and some of her grandchildren spoke at the memorial.

Former President Jimmy Carter, who is in home hospice care, watched the memorial service from his wheelchair. He was covered with a blanket that had Rosalynn Carter’s face on it. His son Chip and his daughter Amy held hands. They were accompanied by their brothers Jeff and Jack.

There were performances by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra as well as by David Osborne, who is a favorite pianist of the Carter family. Family friends Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood also performed at the memorial.

On Wednesday, there will be a private funeral at Maranatha Church in Plains, Georgia, the hometown of Jimmy Carter. The former president has indicated that he will also be buried beside his wife.

Rosalynn Carter was 96 years old when she passed away and had been married to Jimmy Carter for more than 77 years.

Rosalynn Carter was an important member of Jimmy Carter’s campaign from when he stood for the Senate, when he became the governor of Georgia, and when he became the president of the United States.

Rosalynn Carter was a humanitarian and was known for the impressive efforts she put in to remove the stigma surrounding mental health. She also helped to expand Habitat for Humanity and founded the Carter Center, along with her husband, Jimmy Carter. She received tributes from people all over the world after her passing, and her family thanked them in a statement after her death.
