Jean Aranguren hit the go-ahead layup with 2:19 left Wednesday night for Hofstra, which produced a defensive stand in the final seconds to upset Seton Hall 49-48 in Uniondale, N.Y.

Aranguren had 13 points and Seton Hall transfer Jaquan Sanders added 12 points for Hofstra (3-0).

Chaunce Jenkins had 18 points and Dylan Addae-Wusu finished with 11 points for Seton Hall, which has lost two straight and is 1-2 for the first time since 2020-21.

Seton Hall led 24-22 following a sludgy first half in which the teams shot a combined 31.5 percent (17-for-54), including 25.9 percent (7-for-27) from 3-point land.

Sanders hit a driving layup and Cruz Davis dunked following a steal at midcourt to put Hofstra up 40-39 with 5:12 left. Sanders’ basket was preceded by a nine-second stretch in which the Pirates missed 5 of 6 free throws.

Seton Hall’s Prince Aligbe and Aranguren traded layups before the teams turned the ball over on consecutive possessions.

Addae-Wusu split a pair of free throws following the under-4 timeout to tie the game at 42. Davis then hit two free throws before Jenkins put Seton Hall ahead 45-44 with a 3-pointer with 2:41 left.

After Aranguren’s go-ahead basket, Seton Hall’s Isaiah Coleman missed a potential go-ahead jumper and Sanders drained 3-pointer. The Pirates turned the ball over following a timeout, but Hofstra’s TJ Gadsden missed a baseline layup and Addae-Wusu hit a 3-pointer with 51 seconds left.

Gadsden missed a 3-point attempt with 21 seconds to go and Seton Hall called a timeout after getting the ball into the frontcourt. However, Coleman’s corner 3-point shot glanced off the scoreboard just before time expired.
