Jaylon Tyson powers Texas Tech past West Virginia

Jaylon Tyson scored a career-best 27 points on 11-of-15 shooting to lead Texas Tech to a solid 78-72 victory over West Virginia on Saturday in Big 12 play at Morgantown, W.Va.

Pop Isaacs added 15 points and Fardaws Aimaq had season bests of 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Red Raiders (15-12, 4-10). De’Vion Harmon added 13 points as Texas Tech improved to 2-6 on the road.

Erik Stevenson made six 3-pointers and scored 27 for West Virginia (15-12, 4-10), which lost its third straight game. Kedrian Johnson added 20 points for the Mountaineers, who missed their last six field-goal attempts.

Texas Tech is 3-8 all-time in Morgantown but has won the past two visits.

The Red Raiders shot 46.8 percent from the field, including 6 of 14 from 3-point range. Texas Tech owned a 39-28 rebounding edge.

West Virginia made 43.5 percent of its shots and was 11 of 28 from behind the arc.

Stevenson had a chance to give the Mountaineers the lead but his 3-pointer bounced off the rim with 39 seconds left.

Aimaq went to the line with 35.1 seconds left and made both free throws to give Texas Tech a 76-72 lead.

Johnson missed a corner 3-pointer and Aimaq was again fouled with 20.6 seconds left. He made both for a six-point edge as the Red Raiders closed it out.

Tyson drained a 3-pointer to give Texas Tech a 53-50 lead with 11:37 in the contest.

Stevenson followed by scoring the first nine points of an 11-0 run. He converted a three-point play and knocked down two treys in a span of 34 seconds to give the Mountaineers a 59-53 lead. Mohamed Wague added a putback to make it an eight-point margin with 9:06 left.

A short time later, Texas Tech ran off 11 straight points to take a 66-63 lead. Isaacs’ basket knotted the score at 63 with 6:30 remaining and Tyson nailed a 3-pointer 29 seconds later.

Stevenson answered with a 3-pointer to tie the score at 66 with 5:38 remaining.

Aimaq made two free throws to give the Red Raiders the lead with 5:08 left. He added two baskets, the second of which gave Texas Tech a 74-71 advantage with 2:21 to play.

Jimmy Bell split two free throws to bring West Virginia within two with 1:22 remaining.

Johnson had 11 first-half points and Stevenson added 10 as West Virginia led 35-34 at the break. Tyson scored 14 in the half for the Red Raiders.
