Jalen Pickett scored 23 points to lead Penn State to a 75-71 win at Ohio State in a Big Ten contest on Thursday.
Pickett scored the Nittany Lions’ final 14 points of the game to help them pull away. Penn State shot 51.9 percent from the field, went 10-of-19 from 3-point range and won at Ohio State for the first time since 2018.
Seth Lundy scored 19 points and Camren Wynter had 18 points for Penn State (17-11, 8-9), which has won three straight games.
Brice Sensabaugh scored 20 points and Bruce Thornton had 19 points in defeat for Ohio State (11-17, 3-14), which has lost nine straight.
The game featured 20 lead changes.
Leading by a point with more than a minute left, Penn State took a 73-69 lead with 59.1 seconds to go on a three-point play by Pickett.
Ohio State pulled to within 73-71 on a basket by Justice Sueing with 33.9 seconds remaining, but Pickett made two free throws with 28.5 seconds left to make it a four-point game again.
The Buckeyes had five shots on its next possession but missed them all before time expired.
Ohio State held a 65-64 lead with 6:52 remaining, but Pickett scored six straight points on a layup and two jumpers to give Penn State a five-point edge with 2:59 left.
The Buckeyes responded with consecutive layups to cut Penn State’s lead to 70-69 with 1:27 left.
With Ohio State trailing 55-49 with 13:59 remaining, Isaac Likekele made two baskets during an 8-0 run over a span of 2:13 to give the Buckeyes a brief two-point lead. Wynter answered with two straight baskets for the Nittany Lions.
Penn State took a 21-16 lead with 11:11 left in the first half, but Ohio State answered with an 8-2 run to take a 24-23 lead with 8:25 before halftime.
The teams went back and forth for the rest of the half, with six lead changes before the game was tied 37-37 at halftime.
