Due to privacy concerns, Italian regulators on Friday promptly imposed a temporary ban on ChatGPT and said that they had started an investigation into the data-use practices of OpenAI, the US business that created the well-known chatbot.
According to Italy’s data protection office, consumers lacked knowledge regarding the acquisition of their personal information and that ChatGPT had disclosed a breach on March 20.
The maker of ChatGPT may be violating the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), according to the Italian DPA, which has opened an inquiry.
The Garante specifically stated that it had ordered the blocking of ChatGPT due to concerns that OpenAI had improperly processed users’ data and that there was no method in place to prevent children from accessing the technology.
The absence of age verification for ChatGPT users sparked worries from the Italian authorities as well. It claimed that doing this “exposes youngsters to responses that are completely out of line with their awareness and age.” The website is intended for visitors over the age of thirteen.
As the Garante points out speaking to the “mass acquisition and storage of personal data”, the regulation also places a strong emphasis on data minimization and includes principles that call for openness and justice. The company behind ChatGPT, AI research and deployment company, OpenAI, a for profit company does not, at the very least, appear to have informed the individuals whose data it used to train its commercial AIs. That may present it with some challenging circumstances.
