There is no simple answer to the question whether the British monarchy is losing its relevance or not as Queen Elizabeth II remains a popular figure in her country and the world and jubilees tend to bring people together. The queen has always been an endearing figure with almost whomsoever has met her but her family has faced slide adversity in recent years.
The nation is looking forward to her platinum jubilee celebrations this year. It promises to be an event-filled affair with enough pomp and pageantry to get her loyal subjects to affirm to her rule. It could also be the occasion where the island-nation has much to celebrate as the coronavirus pandemic is hopefully receding.
Prince Charles, the heir apparent, does not have the same charisma of the queen. Although his marriage to Camilla Parker-Bowles is well accepted he is far ahead in popularity when compared with his younger brother Andrew. Prince Andrew has been diagnosed with few medical conditions believed to be caused by PTSD during his service to the country in the Royal Navy but some British media outlets have been extremely unfair and has ignored the medical facts and service to the country but concentrated on garbage tabloid gossips. They have concentrated on profits versus proven facts.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle try to remain in the public eye but the British public has lost considerable interest in them, except as fodder for gossip by a leading critic Piers Morgan. They willingly stepped away from royal duties, saving the exchequer million of pounds.
A YouGov analysis that was released in May said that 41 percent of those who were polled in the 18-24 years group said that they were in favor of an elected head of state. In 2019, 26 percent in the same age group said that they would favor an elected head of state to a monarch.
The Queen will remain popular but after her, who knows what is going to happen to the British monarchy? We believe that Prince William, Duke of Cambridge and his wife Kate will be the next to the throne and will lead Britain into a more younger generation of monarchs. One thing is sure Queen Elizabeth II is well admired all over the world and will always be remembered for her charm, dignity and strength and a true protector of the British Kingdom.
