Managers at Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) US retail locations have been holding employee meetings over the past two weeks to outline the risks of unionization and give an update on negotiations between the business and the first unionized store, a facility in Towson, Maryland, reports said.
In the discussions that took place at events called Daily Downloads, the business addressed unions in Q&A and information sessions months ago, and its retail boss also emailed employee members a film on the subject. Additionally, Apple delayed new benefits from places with unions that allegedly caused a labor backlash.
Two Apple stores have unionized so far, in Towson and Oklahoma City, and locations that attempted to organize workers in Atlanta and St. Louis has abandoned their efforts, suggesting that the initiatives have so far been successful, according to reports.
In the most recent round of meetings, which took place in every Apple store in the US, a prepared message from the corporate office, workers were informed by managers that the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), the union that represents Towson employees, is asking for 1.5% of wages in dues. According to the managers, the sum of money could quickly accumulate over time, and employees who do not comply with the payment could be fired after a month if the union’s demands are followed.

Additionally, managers reportedly said that the Towson location was favoring full-time workers who wanted to take the weekends off, which disadvantaged part-timers. They also informed businesses that at the Towson location, more experienced workers would be given preference over new hires when it came to hiring.
Apple’s underlying message to the tens of thousands of retail workers at the firm was very apparent, even if it was not explicitly stated: It seems to portray that if the store where a worker unionizes, the worker could be at a disadvantage, reports say. Managers also implied that even if a small percentage of workers participate in a union election and most of them choose to join, the union will still be valid for the entire business.
The corporation and the unionized Towson store have started to talk, but so far there has not been any progress. The corporation has made two offers in comparison with the stores about 20 requests. One of the union’s demands, an updated nondiscrimination policy, which Apple hesitantly agreed to.
