Tavion Banks notched a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds and Alvaro Folgueiras added 14 points as Iowa rolled past Chicago State 93-54 on Thursday in Iowa City.

Iowa shot 56.9% and finished plus-15 on the glass to improve to 5-0.

Chicago State (0-6) never led, unlike Tuesday’s visit to Iowa’s Big Ten counterpart, Minnesota, when the Cougars pulled ahead late before fading.

Marcus Tankersley paced Chicago State with a game-best 19 points and CJ Ray followed with 12. Stephen Byard led the team with seven rebounds.

Tate Sage (13 points) and Cooper Koch (10 points) also finished in double figures for the Hawkeyes. Bennett Stirtz had nine points, six assists and five rebounds, while Brendan Hausen also scored nine points.

Iowa shot 12-for-31 from long range, with Folgueiras and Hausen contributing three 3-pointers apiece.

Solid inside shooting ultimately fueled the Hawkeyes, however, and was key during a 14-4 run to start the second half that was punctuated by an Isaia Howard dunk off a turnover with 16:05 left.

Strong ball movement helped Iowa to a 42-24 advantage in points in the paint as the Hawkeyes stretched their lead to as many as 43 points.

In the first half, Cox’s layup for Chicago State briefly tied the game at 13, and the Cougars drew within 17-15 on a pair of Ray free throws with 11:35 left. Those marked the Cougars’ only points for the next 6:04, as Chicago State struggled from the floor and with its control; Joseph Owens and Ray both were whistled for offensive fouls during the scoring drought.

Tankersley ended the lull with a three-point play off a jumper in the paint. The Cougars found their stride in spurts, using a 6-0 run to get within seven before the Hawkeyes closed the half on an 9-0 run.

Iowa took a 40-24 lead into intermission. The last points came from Stirtz, who entered the night leading the Hawkeyes with an average of 19.8 points per game. The Drake transfer registered his first points with a three-point play with 2:07 left before halftime, and he converted a three-point play with three seconds left.

Banks, meanwhile, had 11 points and nine boards by halftime.

The Cougars had 11 turnovers compared to seven assists. They have 19 more turnovers than assists this season.
