Indiana freshman forward Mackenzie Mgbako was arrested early Sunday morning after an incident at a Taco Bell near campus in Bloomington.
Mgbako was charged with criminal trespass and resisting law enforcement, two class A misdemeanors. He posted bond and is no longer in custody.
A five-star recruit, Mgbako planned to play for Duke before reopening his recruitment this past April. One month later, he chose Indiana over Kansas.
“IU Athletics is aware of the situation,” an athletic department spokesperson said. “We will continue to gather facts, cooperate with and monitor the legal process, and take further action as the evolving situation warrants.”
Bloomington Police Department captain Ryan Pedigo said in a statement that officers were called to the Taco Bell because a man was refusing to leave the property. Managers told the responding officers that a man in a vehicle was “cursing at and being rude to employees.”
The 6-foot-8 Mgbako cooperated with officers when they asked him to move his car from the drive-thru line to the parking lot, but when officers told him to leave the property, he refused to do so.
“He was told repeatedly that he needed to leave the property by officers, but failed to comply and stayed on Taco Bell property for approximately 15 minutes,” the statement said.
Mgbako also refused to leave his vehicle after being informed he was under arrest. Officers had to “forcibly remove him from the vehicle and he tensed his arms and would not allow officers to secure him in handcuffs,” according to the statement.
It is unknown whether Mgbako will face punishment from the university.
The Hoosiers’ season begins Nov. 7 against Florida Gulf Coast, though they play two exhibition games before then.
