Richard “Alex” Murdaugh’s attorneys have made shocking legal filings today, requesting that state authorities withdraw from the case and federal investigators be brought in, accusing a Colleton County court official of jury tampering, and violating Murdaugh’s civil rights to a fair trial, and requesting a new trial.
In a press conference today, Tuesday morning, Murdagh’s attorneys, Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin revealed what they believe is new evidence that accuses clerk Becky Hill of jury tampering. The attorneys are requesting an evidentiary hearing. “We have sent a request to the South Carolina U.S. Attorney to open a federal investigation into the violation of Alex Murdaugh’s civil rights.”
The autobiography “Behind the Doors of Justice: The Murdaugh Murders,” written by Colleton County Court Clerk Rebecca Hill, went on sale on August 1.
According to the motion by Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin, Hill induced the jury to “reach a quick verdict” and engaged in “frequent private conversations with the jury foreperson” to influence the panel to find Hill guilty.
“Today, we filed a petition based on newly discovered evidence with the SC Court of Appeals to stay Alex Murdaugh’s appeal while a hearing is held on a motion for a new trial,” said Murdaugh’s attorneys in a joint statement attached to the legal filings. The defense claims that the jury selection process was interfered with so the court clerk could obtain a book deal.

Murdaugh case could get a new trial if jury tampering is found. If the clerk of the court betrayed her office for money and fame, the court should rule for Murdaugh to get a new trial. If so, jurors will have to testify in court to prove improper jury misconduct.
Murdaugh is currently two life sentences for killing his son and wife.
