I’m Still Here (2025) Review

Walter Salles’ I’m Still Here (Ainda Estou Aqui) delivers a harrowing and deeply personal portrayal of political persecution and resilience during Brazil’s military dictatorship. Anchored by standout performances from Fernanda Torres and Fernanda Montenegro, the film explores the true story of Eunice Paiva, a mother forced to confront unimaginable loss following the forced disappearance of her husband, dissident politician Rubens Paiva, in the early 1970s.

Set against the backdrop of a politically unstable Brazil, Rubens’ return to Rio de Janeiro after years of exile is marked by tension as he balances family life with discreet support for political exiles. When a sudden military raid shatters their idyllic life, Eunice’s journey of courage and defiance begins. The film poignantly captures her relentless search for answers despite the brutal consequences, including her arrest and torture.

Salles masterfully contrasts the beauty of Rio de Janeiro’s coastal scenery with the oppressive weight of authoritarian rule, creating a visually rich yet emotionally devastating narrative. The heart of the film lies in Montenegro’s portrayal of Eunice in her later years, living with Alzheimer’s but momentarily grasping her tragic past during a news broadcast on the National Truth Commission.

I’m Still Here is not only a tribute to Eunice Paiva’s bravery but also a reflection on the enduring scars of political repression. Salles carefully navigates themes of family, memory, and justice, crafting a story as timely as it is timeless.

This politically charged biographical drama stands as a moving testament to resilience, loss, and the unyielding fight for truth amidst the shadows of history. It’s a film that lingers, much like Eunice’s indomitable spirit.
