The horrific murders of four students of Idaho University on November 13 shook the world. After six weeks of investigation, Kohberger was finally arrested for the murders of Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin. The arrest took place on Friday, in a pre-dawn raid on his parent’s home in Monroe County, Pennsylvania. His DNA was reportedly matched to samples recovered at the crime scene.
Schyler Jacobson, a former friend of Kohberger has expressed shock at the news of the arrest. He stated that he was still “kind of shaking knowing about it,” and cannot believe that someone could do such a thing to anyone. He described how the two would go for runs together at night as he does not like to run alone. They would often make a twosome and run for about six or seven miles. Jacobson finds it completely mind-boggling, but is also relieved that “justice can now be served.”
Nick Mcloughlin, another friend from Pleasant Valley, Pennsylvania, expressed similar feeing to the Daily Beast when he heard of his high school buddy’s arrest in connection to the brutal slayings. Mcloughlin and Kohberger had been teenage friends and had taken heating and air conditioning classes together. Mcloughlin described Kohberger as an overweight and “down to earth” teenager at the completion of their junior year. However, when they started their senior year, Kohberger became “thinner” and had changed into an “aggressive” person.
Kohberger was pursuing a doctorate in criminal justice at Washington State University in Pullman, less than 10 miles from Moscow. According to reports, Kohberger allegedly stalked his victims for weeks before finally killing them. He apparently had gloves on in public places after he had committed the gruesome crime.
According to a friend of one of the police officers assigned to follow him there, the 28-year-old suspect followed the students’ every move for weeks. He was concerned about leaving his fingerprints after the murders and thus wore gloves while visiting a grocery store. The source said that Kohberger was under surveillance and police had observed him taking protective measures to avoid leaving any traces of DNA or fingerprints.
Kohberger reportedly had local ties to the source. He worked as a teaching assistant at the university before driving his white Hyundai Elantra across the country in the days leading up to Christmas, with cops on his tail.
