Idaho Students Murder Update: Surviving Roommate Dylan Mortensen Did Not Call Police Because She was Scared to Death, Goncalves Family Defends

The family of Kaylee Goncalves, who was murdered in Idaho, is defending her surviving roommate, who claims she saw the murderer but did not call the police. Dylan Mortensen, who survived with fellow roommate Bethany Funke after her four friends were stabbed to death on November 13, did not call the police but did provide information about the suspect, according to attorney Shannon Gray.

Gray, who represents the Goncalves family, stated that Mortensen was most likely scared to death when she encountered the man and that she was still ‘a victim in this case.’ The Goncalves are the latest to defend Mortensen after the roommate of a woman who was attacked in 1992 said she, too, had a delayed response in a similar situation. Despite the revelations, the family of victim Kaylee Goncalves stated that Mortensen was most likely scared to death that night to speak with police about what she witnessed.

If convicted of the quadruple murder, suspect Brian Kohberger, faces the death penalty. According to a probable cause affidavit filed this week, Mortensen heard several commotions during the night his roommates were murdered, and had opened his door.

Mortensen told police he saw a suspect dressed in black and wearing a mask over his face and heard one of the housekeepers say, ‘There’s someone here.’ Mortensen stated that after hearing crying, she opened the door and saw a figure dressed in black and a mask with a person’s face and nose, walking towards her. She said she closed and locked the door.

She is now reportedly under pressure to explain why she did not contact the authorities sooner, with some claiming she was ‘frozen’ from fear. Mortensen did not reveal why she did not call the authorities at once or earlier than she did, but people are saying that she could have been fear and probably could not act coherently.

Dylan Mortensen’s delayed response is defended by a yoga teacher who survived the 1992 attack. 50-year-old Alana Zabel said she could relate to the delayed reaction while reconstructing the horrific 1992 attack.

Alana Zabel discovered her college roommate near death in his blood-covered room in 1992 and defended the University of Idaho quadruple homicide survivor Dylan Mortensen’s delayed response. She also stated that she had a delayed reaction and felt guilty for going to bed after hearing her roommates’ heavy breathing in the room and only calling the police the next day. She went on to say that when you live in an environment, such as college, where having strangers in your home is normal, it’s difficult to ‘fathom’ a tragedy like this.

On Thursday, Kohberger was denied bail in Moscow, shortly after the case against him was leaked online. The papers describe how DNA from Kohberger was discovered on a knife sheath found near the bodies of Mogen and Goncalves.
