On Thursday morning, the home where four Idaho college students had been allegedly murdered by Bryan Kohberger was demolished. The building was owned by the University and school officials called it an important step forward towards closure. Both the defendants and the prosecutors did not object to razing the building. However, some family members of the victims disagreed with the demolition.
There were loud sounds early Thursday morning as excavators brought down the front portion of the house. The debris was loaded into a truck and will be carted away. The owner of the home had donated it to the University of Idaho in early 2023. The property had been boarded up and a security fence was also erected around the home. The school decided to raze the rental home in Moscow, Idaho and announced the decision in February.
Spokesperson Jodie Walker told Associated Press that the area where the murders took place was filled with students and many of them had expressed that removing the house would help in the healing process. The grass is expected to be planted on the site after the demolition and there will be a memorial garden in the future.
The close-knit community in and around the University of Idaho had been shocked and traumatized by the brutal killings of students Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen, and Kaylee Gonçalves. They had been fatally stabbed in the rental home in November 2022 and Bryan Kohberger, a Ph.D. student was arrested weeks later.
Family members of victims Gonçalves and Kernodle wanted the home to be preserved as it may provide evidence during the murder trial. However, the university told CNN in an email that the house was “so substantially different than at the time of the homicides” that it would not be possible to authorize the jury to inspect the premises of the rental home.
Bryan Kohberger faces four charges of first-degree murder. Not guilty pleas have been entered on his behalf as he remained silent. An Idaho criminal rule requires a judge to enter a not guilty plea on the defendant’s behalf when the defendant uses this unconventional legal strategy of remaining silent and it is also called “standing mute.” The case is expected to go on trial in 2024.
