Late Saturday, Lunar New Year festivities turned tragic when a gunman opened fire at a ballroom dance studio in Monterey Park, near Los Angeles, California. Many people had gathered to celebrate the Lunar New Year. He killed 10 people and injured 10 others. He tried but failed to kill or injure others, when he targeted another dance hall. The gunman was surrounded by a SWAT team.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said that about close to half an hour after the shooting that took place at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio in Monterey Park, a man had entered another studio called the Lai Lai Ballroom, close by, at Alhambra. Luna said that they were investigating whether the incidents were related.

Sheriff Luna said that a “male Asian suspect” had entered the Lai Lai Ballroom with a “firearm.” People in the Alhambra studio managed to take away his firearm and this made him flee from the venue.

The Alhambra incident at the Lai Lai Ballroom & Studio occurred about 17-20 minutes after the nearby Monterey Park mass shooting, which killed ten people and injured ten more.
Tran entered the Alhambra ballroom with a firearm, which was wrestled away by several people, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna.

He then ran away from the scene. Witnesses reported seeing a white cargo van in the area, and that vehicle is being described as a possible source of information for investigators. Later that day, a SWAT team surrounded a white van in a Torrance parking lot that was thought to be associated with the same suspect.
Monterey Park should have had a night of joyful celebration of the Lunar New Year. Instead, they were the victims of a horrific and heartless act of gun violence.

Officers were led to a white van in Torrance, about 25 miles southwest of Monterey Park, after an hours-long manhunt. Police in tactical vehicles and bomb-squad trucks surrounded the van in a parking lot near Sepulveda Blvd. and Hawthorne Blvd. late Sunday morning.
Tran was discovered dead inside the vehicle from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities released photos of Tran wearing a distinctive wool cap during the manhunt.
