The National Retail Federation estimates that this year’s holiday returns will total $173 billion. Why? Experts estimate that holiday sales in 2023 reached about $1 trillion, a historic high. Here are some things to consider if you plan to return unwanted presents.
Amazon allows customers to return most items within a 30-day window from the receipt of the shipment. This includes new and unopened items, as well as those in their original condition. To initiate a return, customers can navigate to the “Your Orders” page on the Amazon website, locate the relevant order, and click on the “Return or Replace Items” button, following the provided instructions.
Refunds for eligible items are typically processed promptly, with the return shipping cost deducted from the refund in some cases. Items that cannot be returned include products made of wine without UPCs dangerous substances, living plants, live insects, gift cards, items from pharmacies, such as prescription drugs, fresh flower bouquets, and pet food grocery items. For grocery items, if you contact Amazon and tell them the reason for the return they will usually issue a credit to use on Amazon or a refund to your credit card, and no return is required.
For gift returns, you have to input the order number on their website under “Gift Returns” if you wish to return a present. Gift items that were indicated as such at the time of purchase can be returned there; if not, you will be referred to Customer Service for help.
