His Three Daughters (2023), written and directed by Azazel Jacobs, is a deeply emotional and intimate drama that beautifully explores the complexities of family relationships. With a cast led by Carrie Coon, Natasha Lyonne, and Elizabeth Olsen, the film delves into the lives of three estranged sisters brought together by the impending death of their father. It is a poignant meditation on sibling rivalry, grief, and the complicated ties that bind and divide us.

Carrie Coon plays Katie, a stern and controlling mother navigating the complexities of parenthood in Brooklyn while dealing with her rebellious teenage daughter. Coon brings a hardened but deeply vulnerable edge to the role, making Katie’s need for control feel like both a shield and a burden.

In contrast, Elizabeth Olsen’s Christina, a free-spirited wanderer temporarily separated from her child, offers a softer, more detached approach to caregiving, which counterbalances Katie’s tension.

Natasha Lyonne’s Rachel, the stoner sister who never left home, adds a chaotic, unpredictable energy to the trio. Her sardonic humor and indifference mask deeper feelings of abandonment and resentment, and Lyonne plays this duality with characteristic sharpness.

The film is set over three intense days as the sisters gather in their father’s small New York apartment. Jacobs skillfully captures the cramped quarters, using the physical proximity to highlight the emotional tension simmering beneath the surface.

The dialogue crackles with raw emotion as long-buried grievances rise to the forefront, yet there is also tenderness in the moments of silence and quiet reflection. The house becomes a character, a vessel for the sisters’ unresolved conflicts and shared history.

His Three Daughters stands out because of its delicate balance of humor and melancholy. Jacobs injects moments of fun into the heaviness of the subject matter, making the film not just about impending loss but about the resilience of love amid conflict. The sisters’ bickering, while often painful, is also laced with warmth and humor, and this tonal balance keeps the film grounded and relatable.

The supporting cast, including Jay O. Sanders as the dying father, adds depth to the story without overshadowing the central trio. The film’s emotional core is the dynamic between the sisters, each with distinct personalities and shared yet separate histories. As they grapple with the approaching end of their father’s life, they are forced to confront not only their demons but also the love that still exists between them, however fractured it may be.

His Three Daughters is a beautifully rendered portrayal of family dysfunction, love, and reconciliation. Azazel Jacobs delivers a raw, intimate, and ultimately life-affirming film in its depiction of how even the most broken relationships can find healing in moments of vulnerability. It lingers long after the credits roll, reminding us of the fragile, imperfect nature of family bonds.
