Movie Review: Hijack 1971
In the winter of 1971, the quiet skies above Korea turn turbulent in Hijack 1971, a tense and gripping drama directed by Kim Sung-han. The film revisits the harrowing true story of a Korean Air F27 airliner hijacking, blending intense action with emotional depth.
Pilots Tae-in (Ha Jung-woo) and Gyu-sik (Sung Dong-il) are navigating a routine flight from Sokcho Airport to Gimpo. Their journey, however, takes a devastating turn when an improvised bomb detonates shortly after takeoff, plunging the aircraft into chaos.
The passengers, guided by the composed and resourceful flight attendant Ok-sun (Chae Soo-bin), are thrown into a state of panic as they grapple with the unfolding crisis.
The tension escalates when Yong-dae (Yeo Jin-goo), the mastermind behind the hijack attempt, storms the cockpit. With a chilling declaration, “From now on, this plane is going north,” Yong-dae seizes control, steering the flight into uncharted and dangerous territory.
The explosion leaves Gyu-sik with a severe injury, losing sight in one eye, while Tae-in is thrust into a desperate struggle to regain control of the aircraft. The ensuing battle for survival is a heart-pounding race against time, with everyone on board risking their lives to land safely.
Hijack 1971 masterfully captures the raw fear and heroism of its characters. Ha Jung-woo delivers a powerful performance as Tae-in, whose determination and resilience anchor the film. Sung Dong-il brings depth to Gyu-sik, portraying his physical and emotional struggles with poignant realism.
Yeo Jin-goo’s portrayal of Yong-dae is chillingly effective, adding complexity to the antagonist.
Chae Soo-bin shines as Ok-sun, whose calm and composed demeanor provides a beacon of hope amidst the chaos.
The screenplay by Kim Kyung-chan deftly balances action with character development, while Kim Tae-sung’s evocative score heightens the film’s emotional stakes.
Produced by Jung Won-chan, *Hijack 1971* is a testament to the human spirit’s resilience in the face of unimaginable adversity.
This gripping, edge-of-your-seat thriller pays tribute to the bravery of those who faced an extraordinary crisis with courage and determination.
