Hellen Obiri set a women’s course record and fellow Kenyan Benson Kipruto held off countryman Alexander Mutiso Munyao to win the men’s race at the New York City Marathon on Sunday.

Obiri pulled away from her fellow countrywoman Sharon Lokedi, the 2022 New York City Marathon winner, to win the event for the second time in three years. Obiri finished the 26.2-mile race in 2 hours, 19 minutes and 51 seconds, besting the previous course record of Margaret Okayo (2:22:31) in 2003.

Lokedi (2:20:07) and defending champion Sheila Chepkirui (2:20:24) finished in second and third place, respectively, with the top three runners clocking in under the previous women’s course record.

Fiona O’Keeffe finished fourth in 2:22:49, marking the fastest American women’s time in the history of the marathon. Fellow American Annie Frisbie (2:24:12) was fifth.

As for the men’s race, Kipruto, 34, and Munyao both finished at 2:08:09 — however the former staved off the last-gasp surge by the latter to win in three-hundredths of a second.

Fellow Kenyan Albert Korir (2:08:57) finished third, followed by Great Britain’s Patrick Dever (2:08:58) and Switzerland’s Matthias Kyburz (2:09:55) — one one-hundredth of a second ahead of American Joel Reichow.
