On Sunday, New York City residents were briefly alarmed when two patients were transported from a Manhattan hospital by emergency workers wearing hazmat suits. The incident initially raised fears of a potential Ebola outbreak, but officials quickly ruled out the possibility, suggesting the patients were likely suffering from norovirus instead.
The two patients were taken from a City MD urgent care center located at East 125th Street and Lexington Avenue in Manhattan. The sight of hazmat-suited workers sparked concern among onlookers, prompting speculation about a serious infectious disease. However, sources later informed the New York Post that the illness had spread rapidly among the patient’s family members, pointing to norovirus as the probable cause.
Dr. Michelle Morse, Interim Commissioner of Health at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, addressed the situation on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). She stated, “Neither patient had exposure to Ebola or other factors that would indicate risk.”
Dr. Morse also confirmed that one of the patients had been transferred to Bellevue Hospital for routine testing and treatment. The NYC Health Department is working closely with the FDNY, City MD, and NYC Health + Hospitals to monitor the situation.
By Sunday afternoon, the health scare had subsided, and operations at City MD returned to normal.
Background on Ebola and Norovirus
As previously reported by CWEB, Ebola is a rare but highly dangerous infectious disease that causes severe inflammation throughout the body. The virus spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids, contaminated personal items, or exposure to infected animals, such as African fruit bats, which are the primary source of human infections. Once transmitted to humans, Ebola can spread rapidly through close contact.
In contrast, norovirus is a highly contagious virus that causes gastrointestinal symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps. It spreads easily through contaminated food, surfaces, or contact with infected individuals. While norovirus can be unpleasant, it is far less severe than Ebola and typically resolves within a few days.
Thankfully, in this case, the situation was quickly contained, and the public was reassured that there was no risk of Ebola in the city.
