Residents in eastern Ohio near the deadly train crash were assured by the US EPA that it is okay to go home, but they are worried since fish in the area’s bodies of water are perishing.
In the Ohio town of East Palestine, fifty cars, including ten that were transporting hazardous chemicals, derailed on February 3. The disaster, which authorities believe was brought on by a broken axle, did not result in any injuries.
Authorities burned vinyl chloride inside five tanker cars three days after the accident, releasing hazardous gas phosgene and hydrogen chloride into the air. If nothing was done, they claimed, a burn would be preferable to a huge explosion.
Following the derailing of a train carrying chemicals, a West Virginia water provider is strengthening its water treatment procedure as a preventative measure. Authorities issued a warning that the burning vinyl chloride in five of the wrecked cars could release phosgene and hydrogen chloride into the atmosphere.
While managing the emergency response, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources will still need to determine what caused the fish to perish, which may take up to a month.
