Harvard President Claudine Gay will step down on Tuesday afternoon, capping the shortest tenure in the University’s history. Gay became Harvard’s first Black president and only the second woman in history.
“It is with a heavy heart but a deep love for Harvard that I write to share that I will be stepping down as president,” Gay said in a statement on Tuesday, January 2nd, 2024.
Harvard’s top governing body, the Harvard Corporation, stated via email on Tuesday that University Provost Alan M. Garber ’76 will take over as Harvard’s temporary president while a search is conducted for Gay’s permanent replacement.
Following the issue surrounding congressional testimony regarding antisemitism on campuses following Hamas’ attack on Israel, Gay is the second leader of the Ivy League to resign.
She held the position for slightly over six months, making history as Harvard’s first Black president and only the second woman overall. After “extensive deliberations” following the congressional hearing, the Corporation proclaimed unanimous support for Gay three weeks before this statement.

There could be far-reaching consequences for the uproar over the remarks made by three presidents of prestigious US universities during a congressional hearing on antisemitism.
Severe consequences for campus free speech. Supporters of Palestinian rights saw this as an attempt to silence critics of Israel, which is under fire for its military assault on Gaza that has resulted in a high number of civilian deaths.
A few weeks ago, the Harvard Corporation announced that Gay was seeking modifications to two publications to address many instances in which she had neglected to properly acknowledge sources, as discovered by an “independent review” of her published scholarly work.
