On Thursday, Spotify announced that it was not renewing its podcast deal with Archetypes podcast that was produced by Harry and Meghan Markle’s audio company. The podcast deal between the celebrity couple and the digital music platform was signed in December 2020 and had been announced as a multi-year partnership. Both the parties said that the deal would not go forward to a second series.
Spotify and Archwell Audio released a statement that mentioned that the parting of ways was a mutual decision and that they were “proud of the series” that they had made together. The series began in August 2022. The first season featured several celebrity sportspersons, actors, musicians and more.

Although Archtypes was a winner for Spotify as it became the top podcast, the streaming platform expected more content, and it did not meet “productivity benchmarks” according to the Wall Street Journal. It also reported that the deal was worth approximately $20 million.

The Wall Street Journal reported that a WME representative told the outlet that Meghan Markle is developing new content for her web fans on Archetypes. This content will feature on another platform. The first series of the Archetypes podcast had interviews with American celebrities’ stars and also won a People’s Choice award.
Spotify recently laid off about 200 workers. It is restructuring its podcast division. The industry has seen slow growth at about five percent according to Insider Intelligence. Spotify has already canceled other original podcasts in October 2022 and laid off some podcast workers.
Harry and Meghan Markle had stepped away from royal duties in 2020. However, they retain their titles as Duke and Duchess of Sussex and their children have also been given royal titles. After settling in Montecito, California the celebrity couple had signed multi-million, multi-year deals with Spotify and Netflix. Prince Harry also wrote tell all memoir called Spare that earned him both controversy as well as millions of dollars.
