Hannes Steinbach scored 21 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for Washington in an 86-56 win against San Diego in a nonconference game on Monday night in Seattle.

Zoom Diallo put up 17 points and Desmond Claude added 13 points for Washington (8-4), which shot 1-for-15 from 3-point distance in a 70-66 loss to Seattle on Friday but finished 5-for-21 against San Diego.

Juanse Gorosito and Adrian McIntyre scored 15 points each for the Toreros (5-7).

San Diego stayed close until a 20-0 run expanded Washington’s lead to 36-14 with 4:32 left in the first half.

The Huskies scored the first seven points of the game before Vuk Boskovic sank a 3-pointer for San Diego.

Steinbach came back with a 3-pointer for Washington, giving him six of the first 10 points for the Huskies.

Washington had five turnovers through the first five minutes, allowing the Toreros to stay close and even take an 11-10 lead on two free throws by Ty-Laur Johnson with 14:12 left in the opening half.

JJ Mandaquit put the Huskies back ahead for good with a 6-footer, and Steinbach made a layup with 11:17 left to spark the 20-0 run.

Claude and Quimari Peterson each sank a 3-pointer during the decisive run, and Mandaquit capped it with a pair of successful free throws.

The Toreros managed to cut the deficit to 16 on two occasions before halftime, but Washington was able to extend the lead to 46-26 at the break.

Steinbach, who came in averaging a team-high 17.5 points, scored 15 in the first half.

The Huskies took better care of the ball after the opening five minutes and only committed two turnovers the rest of the half.

Washington shot 48.5% from the floor in the opening 20 minutes while holding San Diego to 29%.

San Diego never got any closer in the second half until D’Arrae Goodwin made a free throw with 5:24 left to cut it to 70-51, prompting Steinbach to get back in the game and the Huskies scored the next eight points.

The Huskies played without second-leading scorer Wesley Yates III (14.9 points per game) because of a hand injury.
