A half-naked lawyer in Minnesota, who faced accusations of beating his ex-wife to death, in front of their children has been charged. He faces second degree murder. An eight year old witness said that his father and mother were fighting because she wanted to take the children to church, while he didn’t want them to go to church. The divorced couple also fought about his two-year old brother. The witness also said that she was holding the child during the assault, according to a probable cause statement filed in the 9th Judicial District Court in Minnesota.
Anders Odegaard and Carissa Odegaard were married for a decade and got divorced in 2021. They had five children together. The reason cited for the divorce was “irretrievable breakdown of the marriage.” Although they were given joint legal custody, Carissa got sole physical custody of the children. The court documents also said that the children had been staying with their father, the earlier night, in a small northern city called Warren, in Marshall County, Minnesota.
When Carissa came to pick up their children at about five p.m., on Tuesday, the couple began to fight outside the house. The fight moved inside the home and escalated to murder. Anders, who is 31-years old, has been identified as the state’s attorney for Mercer County in North Dakota. It remains unclear if he is still working for them, as there has been no confirmation.
The children said that Anders Odegaard had struck with his wife with a knife or spatula. Another child said that his father and mother were “tackling” each other. The boy said that his mother told him to call 911 as his father was choking her.
The child said that he stepped over his mother, who was covered in a lot of blood and he had tapped his mother’s foot, but there was no response from her.
The statement also mentioned that one of the children grabbed their two-year old sibling and ran out of the house and asked a passerby to call 911.
The statement said that deputies soon arrived at Anders Odegaard’s home. They found him wearing only a pair of boxer shorts and he had blood in his hair and on his face. He was handcuffed. He gave the same response, “I don’t feel right” to all the questions they asked him. Carissa was unresponsive, although CPR was administered and an ambulance was called.
The youngest child, the two-year was traumatized and was unable to answer any of the questions asked by the authorities.
Carissa death was confirmed by her father. She was declared brain dead on August 24. She was kept on life support as she was donating her organs. Her family is raising money for her funeral and also for her children.
