According to a post on the dark web from the BlackCat ransomware gang, also known as ALPHV, which was examined by CNN and a separate cybersecurity expert, the group is threatening to release 80 gigabytes of private data from Reddit that it claims to have been stolen during a February breach.
The hackers allege in their post that they initially asked for payment of US$4.5 million “for the deletion of the data and our silence” in April. The organization said it followed up on Friday with a fresh demand after receiving no response: Reddit should reverse a contentious new pricing policy that has generated a protest from some of the platform’s most powerful users.
Reddit CTO Christopher Slowe, alias KeyserSosa, revealed in a post that “after successfully obtaining a single employee’s credentials, the attacker gained access to some internal docs, code, as well as some internal dashboards and business systems.”
Reddit claimed that no user passwords, accounts, or credit card details were compromised, and that production systems were not compromised.
Criminals requested $10 million during the attack on Riot in exchange for keeping the stolen material a secret. However, the threat actors tried to sell the data for $1 million on a hacker forum once the ransom was not paid.
Reddit claimed that the phishing assault was similar to one that Riot Games suffered and that allowed hackers to access systems and obtain the source code for the video games League of Legends (LoL), Teamfight Tactics (TFT), and others. Although BlackCat is a ransomware group, they did not encrypt any devices during this attack, it should be emphasized.
