In The Covenant, Guy Ritchie delivers a gripping wartime drama set against the backdrop of the War in Afghanistan.

The film opens in March 2018 with U.S. Army Special Forces Master Sergeant John Kinley (Jake Gyllenhaal) and his unit ambushed by a devastating truck bomb attack orchestrated by the Taliban during a routine vehicle inspection at Lashkargah.

The attack claims the life of Kinley’s interpreter, prompting the need for a replacement. Enter Ahmed Abdullah (Dar Salim), a steadfast and somewhat disliked interpreter who claims he is in it solely for the money.

As the story unfolds, during an undercover mission, Kinley discovers Ahmed’s dark past. Ahmed was once affiliated with the Taliban through the opium trade but defected after they murdered his son.

This revelation adds depth to Ahmed’s character and tension to his relationship with Kinley. When Ahmed later saves Kinley’s team from a Taliban ambush, he earns the sergeant’s respect, solidifying a complex bond between them.

The film’s star-studded cast delivers powerful performances. Gyllenhaal excels as the embattled sergeant, while Salim brings a compelling depth to the role of Ahmed.

Antony Starr, Alexander Ludwig, and Bobby Schofield’s supporting roles add layers to the narrative, making the stakes feel palpably real. Emily Beecham and Jonny Lee Miller also contribute strong performances, enriching the film’s emotional landscape.

Rated R for violence, language throughout, and brief drug content, The Covenant is a harrowing tale of loyalty, sacrifice, and the unbreakable bond forged in the crucible of war. The movie is available on Blu-Ray, DVD, and digital platforms.
