Safeway, a grocery chain with more than 900 stores across the US, is removing self-checkout kiosks from stores in the Bay Area in California. The global chain mentioned theft as the main reason for the aisle’s closure.

Safeway is not the only major retail chain to back off on self-checkout, as Walmart and Dollar General have already closed these aisles in some of their stores. Many web fans, especially Gen Z, are disappointed at the closure of self-checkout.

KTVU was the first to confirm this news, although the global grocery chain has not yet announced the locations in Safeway across California where the aisles will be removed.

A statement from Safeway read, “Operational changes have been made at select stores throughout the Bay Area given the increasing amount of theft.”

It also read, “Self-checkout kiosks have been removed at a few stores. Like other local businesses, we are working on ways to curtail escalating theft to ensure our employees’ well-being and foster a welcoming environment for our customers.”

Some of the Safeway stores that have reportedly lost self-checkout facilities include the one on Pleasant Valley Road in Oakland and others in San Francisco and Emeryville.

Retail “shrink” has been mentioned as the reason why giant retailers have recently shuttered stores in the US.

The industry uses the term shrink for losses due to returns and thefts. Now, CWEB reports that theft has become a reason to remove self-checkout aisles at some stores.

Major retailers added self-checkout kiosks to their stores to save time and money—many web fans like the convenience of using such kiosks.

However, calculations from giant retailers indicate that money is being lost due to theft, so they seem to have decided to limit theft by removing self-checkout in locations where such kiosks increase losses.
