American rock band Green Day announced that it has cancelled their upcoming event in Moscow in light of the current situation in Ukraine. The concert was scheduled for May 29 at the Spartak Stadium. Green Day posted the news on their Instagram page, on Sunday. The Moscow event is a part of the group’s Hella Mega Tour.
The announcement came soon after the Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony received negative reaction from the public for hosting an entertainment show amid the growing tension in Ukraine.
The Instagram story of Green Day began “With heavy hearts, in light of current events we feel it is necessary to cancel our upcoming show in Moscow at Spartak Stadium.”
The high profile band from North America with bandmates Tre Cool, Billie Joe Armstrong, and Mike Dirnt added that they were “aware” that current times were not about “stadium rock shows,” as much bigger events were unfolding.
They also said that they were confident that they would soon return in future to perform, citing hopes that normalcy would return soon. The band also assured fans that refunds would be made for the tickets sold and asked the fans to be safe.
A number of other live entertainment events have also been cancelled over the Russia-Ukraine war. TMZ reported that The Killers group has pulled out of the Park Live Festival that had been slated to happen in July at the Gorky Park, in Moscow this year.
Comedian Louis CK has also posted on social media that he has cancelled his show in Ukraine. Rapper Oxxxymiron has cancelled six sold out shows across Russia to show his solidarity with Ukraine. Last week, indie-pop trio AJR also cancelled a concert event in Moscow that was scheduled for late October 2021.
The situation in Ukraine is worsening every day and over 500,000 people have been forced to move out of the country as a result of the slow advancement of the Russian military into major cities of Ukraine. CNN reported that 352 civilians have lost their lives since Russia invaded its neighboring nation.
