The center-right New Democracy party in Greece has taken a comfortable lead over the leftist Syriza party in the recent elections held in Greece. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is expected to be sworn in as Prime Minister of Greece, for the second time.
The general election was the second one in five weeks as New Democracy was victorious in May but was unable to gain an outright majority. However, the second round gave the party a decisive victory in Greece.
Almost 100 percent of the votes have been counted. New Democracy got 40.5 percent of the vote. This gets them 158 of the 300 seats in Parliament. It is also a 20-points lead over opposition party Syriza. Eight other parties in Greece crossed the three percent threshold needed to join the Greek parliament.

The new parties that will be entering the Greek parliament have caused some consternation as they included parties from the far right, including the Spartan party which is not only anti-migrant but its main backer Kasidiaris is serving a thirteen plus years prison sentence for being a member of a criminal organization.
Other fringe party entrants include nationalist party called Greek Solution as well the ultra-religious Niki party which is anti-abortion. A far-left party called Course for Freedom, which is led by an official who was a former member of Syriza, will also be an entrant in the upcoming Greek parliament.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis won the election in 2019, when he projected himself and his party as the one that would boost growth at a time when the world was reeling under the COVID-19 pandemic. He managed to turnaround the Greek economy, which is now close to regaining an investment grade. In 2010, Greece had lost market access.
Mitsotakis fought on a stronger economic promise this time saying that his government’s focus on the economy would be consolidated further. He made a few promises including a three percent annual growth rate, tax cuts as well as tackling unemployment. This political campaign resonated with the Greeks, and he will be assuming office as the Prime Minister of Greece for the second time.
