Walgreens (WBA) announced last week that it would stop selling abortion drugs in places where Republican lawmakers have threatened legal action. A blue state has now declared that the action will cause it to sever its connections with the huge pharmacy.
“California won’t be doing business with Walgreens, or any company that cowers to the extremists and puts women’s lives at risk,” Newsom tweeted Monday. “We’re done.”
Since announcing last week that it wouldn’t sell the common abortion drug mifepristone in several areas after receiving letters threatening legal action from 20 Republican state attorneys general, Walgreens has come under fire.
Retail pharmacies are now able to sell mifepristone thanks to an FDA decision from January, provided they successfully complete a certification process. 20 Republican attorneys general of states signed a letter last month threatening legal action against businesses that started selling the tablets. Due to this, Walgreens and other major national pharmacies like Rite Aid (RAD) and CVS (CVS) must take difficult actions.

Walgreens said it will continue to make efforts to market mifepristone in “jurisdictions where it is lawful and practically possible.” However, several of the states that threaten Walgreens, such as Alaska, Iowa, Kansas, and Montana, still allow the medicine, which is also used to lessen miscarriages.
