The GOP is exhibiting cracks within the party before the midterms as Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently endorsed Colorado Republican candidate Joe O’Dea, in a robot call. The candidate, who was trailing his Democrat opponent Senator Michael Bennet, saw his popularity improving after he campaigned against Trump and favored DeSantis. Trump denounced DeSantis’ endorsement on his platform Truth and called it “A BIG MISTAKE!” (in capital letters).
On Sunday, the O’Dea campaign announced the endorsement by Ron DeSantis. The robocall, first reported by the Washington Examiner, was as follows: “ Hello this is Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. America needs strong leadership and desperately. The call continues, “That’s why I’m endorsing Joe O’Dea for U.S. Senate. Colorado, please vote for Joe O’Dea. I’ve watched Joe from a distance, and I’m impressed.”
Later on Sunday, Trump retaliated to the robocall by his party member, who is also a titan in the GOP and is generally neck-to-neck on popularity with Trump. He wrote on his truth social platform, “A BIG MISTAKE!”
Last week, Trump hit back at O’Dea after he took a position against Trump. Trump hit back at the Republican and said “MAGA doesn’t Vote for stupid people with big mouths.” He also gave him the acronym RINO (Republican in Name Only).
Republicans have been hoping that Joe O’Dea would flip the Senate seat, in Colorado. These public attacks by Trump of his own GOP candidate could backfire and make the party’s fight much tougher than what it earlier was.
Joe O’Dea has portrayed himself as a moderate Republican candidate in Colorado. Early in October, he had named Florida Governor DeSantis as a potential Republican candidate for the 2024 presidential elections, in an interview on CNN. He had also said that he would support abortion in certain cases, breaking away from the tough stance of his party on the issue. He was not endorsed by Trump in the primaries.
