On Wednesday, the Republican Party held a closed-door meeting to nominate the next House Speaker from the GOP. Last week former speaker and senior party leader Kevin McCarthy was ousted from the position during a vote in the House, as reported by us. After McCarthy’s ouster, two names—Steve Scalise of Louisiana and Jim Jordan of Ohio, who was endorsed by party leader Donald Trump, had been proposed. Steve Scalise has been nominated in the meeting by a narrow margin.

Louisiana Representative and senior GOP leader Steve Scalise won the vote 113-99, in the closed-door meeting held by the Republicans. His candidacy is expected to go on the floor of the House at the earliest, maybe later today as his supporters want to complete the Speaker election.

Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy had been nominated by a larger margin of 188-31. Despite this margin, there was chaos in the House until he was finally elected. He was ousted after Matt Gaetz of Florida brought a motion against him last week.

Louisiana representative Steve Scalise needs 217 votes to win the position of House Speaker. The House has been ineffective without a speaker although there is a Speaker Pro Tempore Patrick McHenry. Although McHenry is technically in charge of the timing of the floor vote, he is expected to follow the call of the GOP nominee.

Steve Scalise has the number 2 slot in the House and many representatives are already potentially eyeing his position even before his formal election in the House. If the Republicans band together, he will be elected as they have a slim majority in the House.

If Jordan or his supporters or others in the GOP party decide to abstain or vote against him, there could be chaos in the House. Democrats have nominated House Minority Leader, Hakeem Jeffries for the post of Speaker. The representative from New York was nominated by his party members on Tuesday.
