Despite resistance from civil liberties organizations, the House of Representatives of the United States of America has passed a bill that would broaden the federal definition of anti-Semitism by a large margin.
The law was approved by the House of Representatives on Wednesday by a vote count of 320 to 91, and it is widely regarded as a response to the ongoing antiwar demonstrations that are taking place on university campuses in the United States. At this point, it is headed to the Senate for deliberation.
The depth and history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict remain challenging to portray, significantly when tensions rise among groups with deeply held – and entrenched – opinions on the matter.
The Republican representative from Georgia, Marjorie Taylor Greene, voted against the bill because she did not agree with one of the examples of antisemitism that were included in the definition of antisemitism provided by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance. This definition included the use of “symbols and images” to describe Israel or Israelis, such as “claims of Jews killing Jesus or blood libel.”
Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, voted against the bill after warning reporters on Tuesday that Republicans were weaponizing anti-Semitism.
