With Chrome 113, which is scheduled to launch in about three weeks, Google (GOOGL) has revealed that WebGPU, an application programming interface (API) that provides web apps additional access to or control over user’s graphics card’s capabilities, will be enabled by default. On Direct3D 12—capable Windows PCs, Macs, and Vulkan—capable ChromeOS devices will all have WebGPU capability.
WebGPU can allow developers to get complex visuals without having to write a lot of code, according to a recent blog post. The API further provides a notable “more than three times” improvement in machine learning model inferences. This is especially interesting considering the current popularity of generative AIs and big language models.
Even while Microsoft’s Bing and Google’s Bard do not need local hardware, there is still a lot of room for cutting-edge machine learning applications that can benefit from WebGPU’s improved speed. Google claims that the impending release of WebGPU this month will serve as a fundamental launching pad for upcoming updates and improvements.
The company has pledged to expand access to shader cores, add even more sophisticated graphics features, and enhance the creation of WebGPU-enabled content, reports say. The ability for developers to create powerful graphics-capable, immersive online applications will probably increase because of these planned enhancements.
The API has been improved over time to expand the capabilities of WebGPU, which has been under development since 2017. Although it will soon be turned on by default in Chrome, Firefox and Safari are also anticipated to support WebGPU in the future. Beyond Windows, macOS, and ChromeOS, Google also has plans to extend its implementation to other operating systems.
Google has revealed plans to hasten the release of upcoming Chrome browser versions. It will “feature freeze” them at a later stage in the development process, but the timeframe for stable versions will remain the same and there is no intention of releasing them any earlier. As a result, it will take less time before users can access the build when developers stop adding new features to it. These modifications are intended to speed up the delivery of the most recent features and enhancements to users while also enhancing Chrome’s development process.
