On Friday, Google (GOOGL) announced that it has developed an artificial intelligence model that will help the tech giant train robots to complete tasks such as throwing out trash and more. The new vision-language-action model will enable their robots to perform actions after understanding them in different situations that are either familiar or new.
In a blog post Google outlined its new VLA model. Called Robotics Transformer 2 or RT-2 this new model is a vision-language-action model (VLA). It is a model that is trained on images and texts from the web. This new model in robotics is a giant step forward in developing helpful robots.
Text from the web is used by language models to learn general ideas and concepts. In a similar manner, the new Google model RT-2 transfers knowledge obtained from data on the web to inform robot behavior. In its blog, Google explains it as “RT-2 can speak robot.”
RT-2 enables both reasoning as well as robot actions in the same artificial intelligence model simplifying data into direct robot actions in both familiar as well as unfamiliar situations. It was also able to perform almost twice as many unfamiliar tasks when compared with an earlier model.
Google said that RT-2 could be used to throw away trash although it has not been trained to do so as it can identify what trash is due its vision-language training data that helps it to do this new job. Although these new VLA robots might not become household robots soon, they might find use on shop floors of industry plants and at other large-scale operations.
The tech giant has said that its new RT-2 is more than existing VLM models. The new artificial intelligence model indicates that general purpose physical robots that could perform multiple tasks in the real world as the next step forward; as artificial intelligence models continue to learn to reason, to solve problems and to interpret information that can be transformed into action.
