Google (GOOGL) announced an additional investment of $2.3 billion in three data centers in central Ohio on Tuesday. The announcement was made at an event at one of its data center sites in Ohio. Senior Google executives, the state Governor, and congresspersons attended the event.

ABC6 reported that the event occurred on the city’s south side at one of Google’s data centers in central Ohio. The tech giant did not mention the amounts that will be invested in the three data centers, but construction activity was happening at the data center near 23 South and Rathmell Road, where the event was held.

Senior leaders from Google spoke about central Ohio’s talent pool, affordability, and other facilities. Jim Anderson, VP of North America Partner Ecosystem and Channels Google Cloud, said at the event that the company hoped to “continue the momentum of economic growth across Ohio and help accelerate its digital future” and more. He also said it included “continuing to deliver AI innovation across our enterprise and consumer services. “

Ohio Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted mentioned that Google’s additional investment in Ohio has impacted jobs and the state’s economy and said they looked forward “to additional partnerships in education, AI, and energy to enhance further Ohio’s position as the tech hub of the Midwest.”

The tech giant’s data centers are New Albany, Lancaster, and Columbus. They run Google’s services, which include search, maps, Gmail, and other services for web fans worldwide. They also run YouTube and Google Cloud, which are social media platforms. These services require a lot of energy to run, so Google partnered with EDP Renewables in 2023.

Google and EDP Renewables are planning to create a 500-megawatt solar energy portfolio. Most of the projects will be located in Ohio as Google continues to expand its data centers in the state.
