After Celebrity Kanye West made false allegations about Floyd’s demise in a recent interview, the family of George Floyd has decided to sue West for $250 million for “harassment, misappropriation, defamation, and infliction of emotional distress,” according to attorneys for the family on Tuesday.
While Dr. Andrew Baker, a medical examiner, testified that Floyd’s drug use was a contributing factor in his death, the compression and restraint of his body by officers were the primary causes, West falsely claimed Floyd died from a fentanyl overdose on the podcast “Drink Champs” on Saturday instead of from Derek Chauvin kneeling on his neck.
The “Drink Champs” episode starring West was taken down from YouTube and Revolt TV on Monday, but the lawyers said that “clips of the rapper’s outburst continue to be viewed and shared on social media platforms by millions throughout the globe.”
According to the statement, West’s comments have “retraumatized” Floyd’s young daughter and are “damaging to the Floyd estate.”
According to the law firms representing the Floyd family, Witherspoon Law Group and Dixon & Dixon, Roxie Washington, Floyd’s daughter, will bring the complaint on her behalf.
Attorneys say West received a cease-and-desist letter from them because of comments he made on Floyd, whose “2020 death at the hands of Minneapolis police ignited a worldwide outcry against police brutality,” according to the statement.
