Gen Z, millennials drive the swicy (sweet, spicy) flavor trend, CWEB reports on new products

Although the sweet and spicy flavor trend has been part of Asian and South American foods for centuries, it is gaining more appreciation in North America after web fans belonging to Gen Z and millennials began adopting it in large numbers. Recent research shows that these core groups have embraced the flavor, making food and beverage giants offer the swicy (sweet and spicy) flavor in their new products.

Some of the well-known sweet and spicy flavors already used in America include Mike’s Hot Honey, Gochujang (a red chili paste used to spice different foods such as snacks, drinks, and desserts) from Korea, salsa from Mexico, chaat masala from India, siracha from Thailand, agrodolce sauce from Italy, chili in chocolate cakes and bars, and others.

The younger generations in North America are more diverse, have traveled more, and have tried new global flavors, which they wish to continue with. Older generations have also embraced spicy, swicy, and hot flavors, but in smaller numbers.

Spicy, swicy, and fiery flavors are popular in many new snacks, beverages, frozen foods, and more. As Gen Z and millennials drive higher sales, giant food and beverage companies offer these hot trends even in the summer heat.

In February, Coca-Cola (COKE) launched a new drink called Coca-Cola Spiced. It combines the traditional Coke flavor with raspberry and spice flavors. It is available in full-sugar and zero-sugar versions.

In April, Starbucks (SBUX) added three new flavors to its spring lemonade drinks: Spicy Dragonfruit, Spicy Pineapple, and Spicy Strawberry.

PepsiCo (PEP) owns the Flamin’ Hot Snack and Beverage brand. It reported an over 30 percent increase in sales in 2023 compared with 2022.

Nestle (NSRGY) has launched several spicy pizza combinations and has used Mike’s Hot Honey in some of these combinations.

Primary global food and beverage brands are catering to web fans from Gen Z and millennials with spicy, swicy and fiery combinations across different types of food.
