Officials of United States and Mexican are calling on the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare a global health crisis due to a fungal outbreak associated with cosmetic surgeries in Mexico. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that two individuals who underwent procedures involving epidural anesthesia have died from meningitis. A total of nearly 400 individuals in the United States and Mexico are currently being monitored for potential infection.
As a precautionary measure, two cosmetic clinics located in Matamoros, Mexico, have been closed down. Authorities in both countries are advising individuals who received surgeries involving epidural anesthesia at either the River Side Surgical Center or Clinica K-3 since January to seek medical evaluation, even if they are currently not experiencing any symptoms. The CDC has identified 25 individuals in the US who are suspected to have or have probable cases of fungal meningitis, whose symptoms of meningitis include fever, headache, neck stiffness, vomiting, light sensitivity, and changes in mental status. These symptoms may initially be mild and develop over the course of several weeks, but they can rapidly progress and become life-threatening.

The primary early symptom of fungal meningitis is headaches, followed by fever, vomiting, neck pain, and blurred vision. Although fungal meningitis is not contagious, it can be effectively treated with antifungal medications. However, it can rapidly become life-threatening once symptoms appear. Due to the affordability of medical services, many Americans opt to travel to Mexico for their healthcare needs.
The CDC strongly advises anyone who received epidural anesthesia at the aforementioned clinics during the specified time frame to visit a healthcare center, urgent care facility, or emergency room as soon as possible for meningitis testing, even if they are not experiencing any symptoms. Individuals who test positive for infection will receive antifungal medications, while those who test negative will be instructed to monitor for symptoms and may be requested to return for further testing after two weeks.
