According to U.S. prosecutors, Sam Bankman-Fried, the creator of the defunct cryptocurrency exchange FTX, has been using a virtual private network (VPN) to access the internet, which might lead to tighter restrictions on his bail terms.
Prosecutors in the US are concerned that while out on bond, he might visit dark web or foreign crypto sites using the privacy tool.
The government “promptly informed defense counsel and voiced concerns about the defendant’s use of a VPN” after finding he had utilized the anonymity tool twice in recent weeks, according to a letter from the U.S. attorney Danielle Sassoon to Judge Lewis Kaplan, dated Feb. 13.
In a statement to U.S. District Court Judge Lewis Kaplan, prosecutors stated, “Today, it came to the government’s attention…that the defendant used a VPN or “Virtual Private Network” to access the internet on January 29, 2023, and February 12, 2023. The government has charged Bankman-Fried with a number of offences related to FTX, including fraud, conspiracy, and money laundering. Judge Kaplan is in charge of this case.
