FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried, who is currently lodged at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn after his house arrest was revoked for witness tampering, is asking to meet his lawyers outside jail, five days a week, according to popular outlets. He faces criminal charges for the alleged misappropriation of billions of dollars of customers’ funds.
Both Bloomberg and Reuters reported that Sam Bankman-Fried’s lawyers had written a letter to Judge Lewis Kaplan. The letter said that the conditions under which Sam Bankman-Fried had to prepare for his scheduled October trial were “entirely inadequate.”
Sam Bankman-Fried had been under house arrest in his parents’ home in Palo Alto in California for several months after posting a bond after he faced criminal charges due to the collapse of crypto exchange FTX of which he was a co-founder and CEO.
Earlier, Sam Bankman-Fried had received warnings about allegedly breaking his bail conditions during his house arrest such as reportedly using a VPN network, contacting potential witnesses through encrypted apps and more. However, his bail was finally revoked for witness tampering as he leaked selective entries of his former girlfriend Caroline Ellison, who was the CEO of hedge fund Alameda Research. She is expected to be a witness for the prosecutors. She and other senior executives pleaded guilty to criminal charges, unlike Sam Bankman-Fried whose plea remains not guilty.
Sam Bankman-Fried’s lawyers said that he was given only two days a week to review the evidence which was huge, and this was a violation of his rights to effective counsel. The lawyers also said that he did not have a dedicated computer or a way through which he could share materials with his lawyers online.
Federal prosecutors said that they were willing to load the documents on hard drives that could be used on MDC’s computers. The government also said that it could not load all the documents on a laptop with internet.
The letter from the federal prosecutors to judge Lewis Kaplan also said that the former crypto mogul Sam Bankman-Fried, who is lodged in the Brooklyn jail, has been given “extraordinary accommodations.”
