Although the results of President Emmanuel Macron’s hastily called elections in France weeks before the Paris Olympics have not given the president’s party a majority to govern the nation, Marine Le Pen’s far-right party has reportedly been delegated to third place.

The left-party coalition in France, led by Jean-Luc Melenchon, is expected to gain the most seats. No party will have a clear majority, leading to a hung parliament in France.

Prime Minister Gabriel Attal tendered his resignation after the party’s dismal performance under his leadership, but President Emmanuel Macron has asked him to stay on as PM. Attal said he would remain at his post “as long as duty demands.”

It would be prudent to do so as the Paris Olympics are looming. The country needs stability as it hosts the largest and most popular global games in Paris in the days ahead.

President Emmanuel Macron had called for an election on June 9 after the far-right National Rally led the European Union elections. They also led the first round of the national polls.

Within a week, the far left and the centrists came together to pit winning candidates against the far right, and hundreds of candidates who would have made it a three-cornered fight withdrew after the first round.

It appeared as if the main aim of the parties was to prevent the far right from getting a majority in parliament, and they succeeded.

Current results show that the New Popular Front leftist coalition leads in over 180 seats. Macron’s centrist alliance currently has more than 160 seats, and Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally and allies are leading in 140 seats.

Although the NR could not get the 289-seat majority to control the powerful National Assembly, which has 577 seats, the party has improved its tally, as it obtained 89 seats in 2022.
