Movie Review: Freakier Friday (2025)
“Freakier Friday,” directed by Nisha Ganatra and written by Jordan Weiss, delivers a fresh and spirited continuation of the beloved body-swap comedy. Produced by Walt Disney Pictures, this sequel to 2003’s Freaky Friday reunites original stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, this time exploring the challenges of parenting, stepfamilies, and second chances.
The story follows Tess (Curtis) and Anna (Lohan), who are now mother and grown daughter, respectively. Anna is preparing to remarry and has a daughter, Harper (Julia Butters), and a soon-to-be stepdaughter, Lily (Sophia Hammons).
But chaos returns when a run-in with a mysterious fortune teller during Anna’s bachelorette party leads to a four-way body swap—Tess and Anna find themselves in the bodies of Harper and Lily, and the girls in theirs. The resulting mayhem forces all four to better understand one another across generational and emotional lines.
The film strikes a charming balance between slapstick comedy and emotional insight. Themes of empathy, blended families, and mother-daughter relationships take center stage, while longtime fans are treated to nostalgic callbacks and returning characters.
