France has called for a migration treaty between the UK and the EU following the death of 12 migrants who tried to cross the Channel this Tuesday. The boat of the undocumented immigrants, of which some were minor children, capsized in the Channel. This incident has been the worst one this year and led to the call by French authorities for new negotiations between the UK and the EU on illegal immigration.
France’s Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin rushed to the tragic site at Wimereux, a town close to Boulogne-sur-Mer, a city located on the northern coast of France. He spoke to reporters and told them in detail about the problems that the French government was facing as many illegal immigrants crossed over from the EU, including France, to the UK.
He said France spent much more than the tens of millions of Euros in the negotiations between French President Emmanuel Macron and former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to prevent Channel crossings.
Darmanin said that there were several reasons why illegal immigrants crossed over from France to the UK and listed some of them. He said, “Often, you can work without having papers,” and many people “try a lot to go to Great Britain” as they know they might not be deported.

Earlier, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron resolved to have stronger “cooperation” between the two nations as they handle the surge in the number of undocumented migrants crossing over from France to the UK.
In 2023, 12 people died during Channel crossings while 25 people are already dead to date in 2024. Channel crossings are risky journeys as migrants often travel in small boats. The UK government has said that 21,615 migrants have crossed this year using small boats.
