On Sunday, police officers investigating the charges against misuse of finances by the Scottish National Party (SNP) arrested former Prime Minister of Scotland and leader of the party Nicola Sturgeon. She stepped down from the leadership in March. Earlier her husband Peter Murrell, who was the chief executive of the party, was arrested in April. About two weeks later, Colin Beattie, the former treasurer of SNP had also been arrested.
Although Murrell and Beattie were released after questioning and face no charges, the Sunday arrest of Sturgeon surprised many. It is a fall in grace for the former strong leader as Nicola Sturgeon was the first minister for Scotland for more than eight years before she resigned. There was turmoil and finally Humza Yousaf succeeded her. He was the former health secretary.
As per British protocol, a statement released by Police Scotland simply mentioned that a “52-year-old woman” was arrested on Sunday “as a suspect in connection with the continuing investigation into the funding and finances of the Scottish National Party.” She was released later on Sunday without charge.

The Criminal Justice (Scotland) Act of 2016 allows police to release a suspect but they can be arrested again, at a later date and this provision might have been used for all the three SNP members.
Police have been investigating the SNP for two years under Operation Branchform. Complaints had been received about the status of £666,984 that had been collected by activists and donated to the SNP for a future referendum campaign for the independence of Scotland. The case is ongoing.
Nicola Sturgeon has been the first minister of Scotland for over eight years. She has been the only woman first minister in the history of Scotland. The high-profile arrest is expected to have repercussions for the party, although all the three former prominent members were released. Some members of the SNP are already calling for a suspension of the lady who was once one of the greatest leaders of Scotland.
Nicole Sturgeon released a long statement on social media a short while ago stating her distress and shock on her arrest. She thanked her web fans and others for their support and maintained that she was “innocent” and that she would be “back in Parliament soon” where she would “continue to represent” her “Glasgow Southside constituents” to the best of her ability.
