In an effort to build an exact clone of a semiconductor plant in China, a former Samsung Electronic executive stole the plans and drawings from the chip company. He has since been detained and charged. According to the Yonhap news agency, the 65-year-old man was accused of breaking the laws against unfair competition and the preservation of industrial technology.
The man whose name has not been revealed is charged with stealing trade secrets between August 2018 and 2019, including basic engineering data (BED) for the chip plant and process layout and design drawings, so that a replica of the plant could be built in the northern city of Xi’an with support from an undisclosed Taiwanese company. The unidentified man was at Samsung for 18 years. To make sure there are no contaminants in the manufacturing facilities, BED data is necessary. The replica was to be constructed about 1.5 kilometers away.
Despite promising to invest $6.2 billion in the project, an unnamed Taiwanese business was unable to follow through. Instead, he acquired $358 million from a consortium of Chinese investors and started manufacturing experimental goods using Samsung technology at a chip plant in Chengdu.
According to reports, the theft cost Samsung $233 million in losses. Six additional people were charged with conspiring in the alleged technology leak, including a worker at Samsung Electronics and five workers at a Chinese chipmaker the former executive founded.
