To alleviate the workforce crisis, former President Obama wants employers to remove degree requirements from more six-figure jobs due to the labor shortage.

Several state administrations recently stopped using this approach. For example, the majority of state government jobs no longer require a four-year degree, thanks to the efforts of Pennsylvania’s new Democratic governor Josh Shapiro. Both Alaska and Georgia, states with Republican governors, have taken similar actions over the past two months, with an executive order in Alaska and pending legislation in Georgia. These actions represent an increasingly popular, bipartisan approach to addressing the United States’ ongoing labor shortage.

The policy is directed at people who leave the workforce because of the lower income offered by positions they are qualified for. This is what the Harvard Law alumna tweeted this week after sharing a piece by Vox reporter Rachel M. Cohen advocating that businesses stop “degree inflation,” which is the practice of requiring education for positions that don’t require it.

Republicans and Democrats strive for votes in favor of degree-free policies.Obama’s remarks follow Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro’s signing of his first executive order, which removed the requirement for a four-year degree for around 65,000, or 92% of state civil service posts, in January 2023.

Obama’s support for this kind of strategy is shared by President Joe Biden, who mentioned Ohio during last month’s State of the Union speech. Many “jobs paying $130,000 a year, and many don’t require a college degree,” he claimed, could be found in thousands at new industries in the state.
